American Flag

American Golden Ratio Flag, 2025
Digital print on canvas with handmade stretchers
36” x 52.25 ”x 1.5”
This work explores the hidden geometry within the American flag, revealing its potential alignment with the Golden Ratio, a mathematical principle found in nature, ancient architecture, and sacred art. Known for symbolizing balance, beauty, and growth, the Golden Ratio offers a deeper lens through which to view the flag not just as a national emblem, but as a visual manifesto of the founding ideals.
By using proportions of 13 by 21, echoing Fibonacci numbers, and highlighting the placement of the blue canton and its 7x8 grid of stars (totaling 56 squares), the piece suggests that the flag’s design may reflect more than historical coincidence. It embodies Enlightenment thought, sacred geometry, and perhaps even esoteric intention pointing to a desire to align the American experiment with a universal order.
This work invites viewers to reflect on the idea of America not only as a political entity but as a philosophical project one grounded in unity, diversity, and the pursuit of a more harmonious future.
